How this varies: Sweden's own official government Twitter account confirmed in 2018 that the recipe was brought home by King Charles XII, based on a meatball dish he encountered during his years in exile in Ottoman Turkey in the early 1700s — a rare case of a national government publicly conceding a dish's foreign origin.
Ingredients
- 500g ground beef and pork mix
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs soaked in 1/3 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/2 onion, finely grated
- 1/4 tsp allspice, 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef stock
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Lingonberry jam, to serve (optional)
Steps
- Mix ground meat, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, onion, allspice, and nutmeg; shape into small balls.
- Melt butter in a skillet, fry meatballs in batches until browned on all sides and cooked through; set aside.
- In the same skillet, whisk in flour with the remaining butter, cook 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in stock, then cream, simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Return meatballs to the gravy, simmer 5 more minutes.
- Serve with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam.
